Man, I just needed to take a step back and realize how much of a blow this is to the world of entertainment and culture in general.
In a world where these mediocre laughtrack sitcoms still get churned out and still do really well, there are very few shows that dare challenge our creative minds and our intelligence in general. Community is one of those shows that, somehow, seems to be above everything else. It’s not that I’m saying it’s funnier or more tearjerking than something else, it’s just something completely different.
Perhaps it’s the meta-ness of the show, perhaps it’s the constant creative writing. But there’s just something about Community that makes it feel like something completely seperate from the rest of the world of TV shows. It’s self aware enough to not be preachy or “self righteous” (for lack of a better term), it’s clever enough to not insult our intelligence, it’s creative enough to still be relevant and interesting, and last but certainly not least, somehow, through all these things, it’s STILL something I can relate to. Despite the quirky characters, despite so many odd things, I can still relate to a lot of the characters and what they go through. Because at the end of the day, looking past all the hilarity and odd things, it’s just a show about a group of friends that love eachother despite their flaws and differences.
And THAT’S why we’re losing one of the greatest shows in the history of television, and also one of the most “revolutionary” pieces of entertainment culture.
So, in conclusion: The show will never be the same without Dan Harmon, and I TRULY HOPE that somehow, through some miracle, he’ll be rehired (despite the implausability). But, if not: R.I.P Community (2009 - 2012).
